From the River to the Bay

Capt. William Woodside Self-Guided Tour

A descendant of Rev. James Woodside recently asked for places to go when she visits Brunswick this summer. Rev. Woodside didn’t stay long in Brunswick, but his son, William, did. I’ve designed an easy tour of William’s Brunswick from the Androscoggin River to Maquoit Bay, with maps, narrative, and further resources.

Capt. William Woodside was the 2nd of three commanders of Fort George at the head of Maine Street, overlooking the falls. From there, it’s just a four-mile meander south down to Maquoit Road and the Woodside homestead overlooking Maquoit Bay. Stops include:

  • Site of Fort George
  • Pejepscot History Center to see their collection of Woodside artifacts
  • First Parish Cemetery to see Capt. Woodside’s 1778 tombstone
  • Maquoit Cemetery where many of his descendants are interred
  • Site of Woodside blockhouse
  • Wharton’s Point Landing
  • Maquoit Bay Conservation Land trail (off of Woodside Rd., of course)

Enjoy!

Below are downloadable PDF files for information about each stop on the tour, research resources, and a map to the location of Capt. William Woodside’s grave in First Parish Cemetery. The files will not open in the blog post, but must be downloaded to your device.

Please note that William Woodside is referred to as Esq. on his tombstone rather than Capt.

  2. Hi Barbara,

This looks so intriguing! Thanks for framing this self-guided tour and providing resources informing the tour. I’m going to walk it!

  3. And add another 4 miles if you do the Maquoit Bay trail off Woodside and Bunganuc Rds. Chunking it is perfect.
